PEMIKIRAN FAZLUR RAHMAN TENTANG PEMBARUAN PENDIDIKAN ISLAM: MEMADUKAN TRADISI DAN MODERNITAS

Abstract

This article discusses the thoughts of Fazlur Rahman on the reform of Islamic education, which seeks to integrate Islamic traditional values with the demands of modernity. The background of this study is based on the dichotomy between religious education and general education, which has led to an intellectual crisis in the Muslim world. Fazlur Rahman proposes educational reform through the integration of modern science with Qur’anic values and Islamic ethics as the main foundation of education. This study employs a qualitative method with a library research approach through the analysis of Fazlur Rahman’s works and related literature. According to Fazlur Rahman, Islamic education emphasizes the importance of developing individuals who are critical, rational, and morally grounded, as well as capable of responding to contemporary challenges without losing their Islamic identity. He argues that curriculum reform, learning methods, and intellectual development are essential steps in building a progressive Islamic educational system. Fazlur Rahman’s ideas remain relevant as a foundation for the development of contemporary Islamic education that is integrative and adaptive to the advancement of science and technology.
