THE CONCEPT OF INTENTION IN LEARNING ACCORDING TO AL-GHAZALI AND ITS IMPLICATIONS FOR STUDENTS OF ISLAMIC RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

Abstract

The pragmatic trend in Islamic higher education has shifted students’ orientation in learning from seeking knowledge as a form of worship to pursuing academic achievement and material benefits. Consequently, the learning process tends to emphasize outcomes, such as grades, academic degrees, and career opportunities, while neglecting spiritual and moral dimensions. This study aims to examine the concept of intention (niyyah) in the learning process according to Imam Al-Ghazali and its implications for Islamic Religious Education (PAI) students amid the crisis of academic pragmatism. This study employed a library research method, with primary data derived from the works of Imam Al-Ghazali and supported by relevant books, journals, and other literature in Islamic education. Data were analyzed using content analysis. The findings reveal that, according to Al-Ghazali, intention is the fundamental basis of learning. Knowledge should be pursued to attain closeness to Allah, improve personal character, and contribute to society. Strengthening proper intentions and practicing self-purification are essential in developing PAI students’ honesty, sincerity, responsibility, and noble character. Al-Ghazali’s educational thought remains relevant in addressing contemporary educational challenges and strengthening character education in Islamic higher education.
